First Aid & Water Safety Bulletin
Important Mandatory Changes to Standard & Emergency First Aid
Course Content
Effective immediately, the Canadian Red Cross,
Ontario Zone, will implement mandatory changes to Standard and
Emergency First Aid courses.
When the 2005 ILCOR Guidelines were introduced last year, it became
necessary for the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) to
perform a first aid provider program review. Each province maintains
a different set of guidelines for first aid training, and the
content of our Standard and Emergency First Aid courses has been
modified to meet WSIBs first aid standards.
Changes were made to the content of the Emergency First Aid (EFA)
course and consequently day one of the Standard First Aid (SFA)
course. Changes affect course content only. The time frame to teach
an EFA and SFA course remains the same. If time is allocated
accordingly, there is ample time in an EFA and SFA course to
accommodate the additional detail required.
As a reminder, the must knows for each chapter of the Emergency and
Standard First Aid courses must be covered according to the
guidelines found in the Instructor Manual.
All Red Cross branches and Authorized Providers are required to
adopt these changes effective immediately.
Please find attached a table with detailed information on the
required changes.
